The Sinclair Nickel Operation is located approximately 100 kilometers south of the Cosmos Nickel Operation Western Australia. Since the discovery of the deposit in November 2005 resource drilling, interpretation and project evaluation was carried out, culminating in project approval in late 2007.
Construction of the Sinclair Operation commenced in December 2007. It was a greenfield project and as such required the construction of roads, water supply, village, all weather airstrip, communications, process plant, workshops and all other facilities required to operate a modern open pit and underground mining and processing operation. First concentrate production was achieved in October 2008 as part of the concentrator optimisation process.
The open pit mine at Sinclair was completed in the third quarter of 2009 while development of the underground mine was deferred in April 2009 due to market conditions. Sinclair has been repositioned as a swing producer and will operate as a satellite operation, leveraging the infrastructure and capacity available from Cosmos to limit overheads.
