Nickel

Xstrata Nickel operates an electrolytic nickel refinery at Kristiansand, Norway which utilizes chlorine leach technology. It produces nickel, cobalt, copper, gold, silver and platinum group metals. The nickel produced is very high grade purity nickel in the form of cathode and crown products, which are typically sold into first end-use applications such as high nickel alloys, superalloys, low alloy steel, foundry, electroplating and electroforming.

Cobalt

Xstrata Nickel is also a major producer of high grade purity cobalt cathode at the Kristiansand refinery. The majority of the cobalt feed comes from intermediate feeds including recycled sources making Xstrata Nickel a cobalt partner of choice. It is typically sold into such end-use applications such as aerospace, land-based turbines and electronics.

Ferronickel

In the Dominican Republic, Xstrata Nickel operates an integrated ferronickel operation called Falcondo. The ore is mined, milled, smelted and refined at Falcondo to produce a ferronickel cone. The ferronickel cone typically contains 38% nickel with the balance being iron, and is a highly sought after product by stainless steel mills worldwide.

The nickel, cobalt and ferronickel are marketed exclusively by Glencore on a global basis.
